Wind Chime

Wind-Chime is an interactive installation that plays with human and “natural” sound in our everyday environment. Using software developed by the artist, the piece generates ever-evolving music that responds to the wind, much like leaves rattling in the trees. The music is constructed from a sound palette of samples recorded on the University of Miami campus: bird calls, crickets, animal sounds, air conditioners, buzzing light fixtures and more. Many of these sounds might normally blend into the background. By reconfiguring them in unexpected ways, the artist hopes that listeners will gain a heightened awareness of these sounds when they hear them in their normal context.

The piece was developed for and funded by anthropoScene: Art and Nature in a Manufactured Era, a show of ecologically-oriented art sponsored by the Abess Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy at the University of Miami, and Artists in Residence in the Everglades (AIRIE).
